Five Independent Horror Films to Look Forward to in 2017

While 2016 is coming to an end, it’s not too early to start looking forward to 2017. Some of the great horror lately have been coming out of the independent scenes. This year alone have had some great films released like “The Love Witch”, “Nina Forever” and “Harvest Lake” to name a few. It’s be There are also a lot of upcoming independent horror films that I’m looking forward to in 2017 including “Red Eye”, “Mania”, “B.C Butcher” and “Bed of the Dead” to name few but these are the five films that I’m looking forward to the most and hopefully gets released in 2017.

Celluloid Wizard in the Video Wasteland: The Saga of Empire Pictures

I know its a documentary but it fits in to the horror theme. When I first heard about this project through IndieGoGo, I knew that I had to back this project because I’m a big Charles Band fan and the fact that I liked some of the films from Empire Picture like Re-Animator, Trancers and Dolls. This documentary is about the rise and fall of Empire Picture. From this trailer, this looks like it’s going to be a great film for fans of Empire Pictures. Can’t wait to see this when it’s finally released.

Return to Return to Nuke’ Em High

It’s been two years since vol.1 came out on Blu-Ray. It’s a film that I liked a lot as it was fun and of course I’m a big fan of Lloyd Kaufman’s films. Yours truly has been waiting the conclusion of this two part film since watching the first one. I figured the film would be released this year but it took a while with more footage being shot and post production taking a while. Thankfully, it’s in the home stretch and I’m hoping it has on blu-ray release sometime in 2017.

Truth or Dare

This is a film that I first heard through IndieGoGo a couple of years ago. I’ve been looking forward to for a while as it’s having trouble finding distribution. The film marks the directorial debut for actress Jessica Cameron who has appeared in such horror films “Silent Night”, “All Through the House” and the upcoming “Red Eye”. The trailer looks killer and can’t wait to see this whenever it gets release. I’m hoping 2017 is the year that this film finally gets release here in the U.S.

Death House

This upcoming film is being dubbed as horror’s version of the expendables written by the late Gunner Hanson. I was sold on this film when I first saw the behind the scenes documentary from The Dorkning. This film has a cast that includes Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Sid Haig, Dee Wallace, Barbra Crampton, Debbie Rochon, Sean Whalen, Felissa Rose, Tony Moran, Bill Mosley, Cortney Palm to name a few. This is definitely one that I’m going to check out. To see a sneak behind the scenes peak, you can check it out for yourself.

We Are the Flesh

This one I’m very interested in as this will be the Arrow Films releases here in the U.S. The film played at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival this year. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this film and the trailer to this film is mind blowing. This has the potential to be great. I have a feeling this will be one of those films that I’ll be taking about at the end of 2017.

Film Review: "Abattoir"

Darren Lynn Brosman has been one of my favorite horror directors within the last ten years. With films like “Repo: The Genetic Opera”, “The Barrens” and most recently “Alleluia: The Devil’s Carnival 2”, there’s a reason why he has been great for the horror genre. When I heard about his latest “Abattoir”, I knew that I had to see this one way or another because his films have been so good.

The film is about an investigator reporter who has to come to grips with a tragedy when her son in law mysterious kills her sister and niece. She is aided by a detective who’s trying to find out what happened and would make her son in law commit those murders. Their investigation takes them to a haunted house has been built out of various tragedies. Soon, they come across a mysterious man who has all the answers and how the house is linked to the murders. Can they find out what happened before the both of them become a part of the house’s tragic history?

I’ve personally have seen just about everyone one of Bousman’s films since he burst on to the scene with “Saw 2”. It’s amazing how he grown as a filmmaker, as he is one of the best horror directors out there period. With that said, I thought his latest film “Abattoir” is his best directing that he has done to date.

One of the things that makes Brousman’s direction great was that he’s able to make everything have this consistent dark look to all of his films. Whether its “Repo” to his lessen known films like this, he’s able to bring a level of dread and darkness that makes the images feel like you’re watching a gothic film noir. It’s what makes this film look very well from a visual standpoint and enhances the screenplay that you see it on screen. The other thing that Brousman does very well is the way that he directs his cast. He makes sure the performances are interesting enough that it gels very well with the gothic and dark tone that this film is going for. It’s always been one of the reason why his films have been entertaining.

Speaking of the performances, I thought the star of the film was Dayton Callie. He does a very good job making sure that he gives the character a villainous Jim Jones type tone to it. It helped make his character frightening to watch every time he appears. The film also has a strong lead performance from Jessica Lowndes as the reporter trying to investigate her sister and nephew’s deaths. She really does a good job making her character very dark which makes her quest to find out the truth engaging. It kept me interested even though the end result felt predictable.

The screenplay was good for the most part. What I liked about Christopher Monfette’s screenplay was it was able create a level of dread and had a gothic feel throughout the film. Whether it was the intense action to how some of these characters were created, everything added so well to the film’s tone. It made it very dark and gloomy. The other thing that his screenplay does very well is that he’s able to develop the story. Whether it’s the way that it goes into the film’s antagonist to the way it follows its main character, everything is done in a way that makes the story interesting to watch.

If there was one that I didn’t like about the screenplay was the fact that it was predictable. I hate that when you get the feeling how a film is going to end before it goes into the third act. It takes the fun out of it. Still, I enjoyed this film, as that’s the only grip I have with it.

With its very good directing and its excellent performances from Jessica Lowndes and Dayton Callie, this is worth your time. “Abattoir” is a very creepy and gothic film that will leave you with chills.

Review "The ID"

Sometimes I’ll take a film where I would not know what to expect but the names involved would make me take that chance. This was the case for the thriller “The ID”. I was attracted to the film because I’d like Amanda Wyss from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and the fact that it was from the producers of the excellent documentaries “Never Sleep Again”: The Elm Street Legacy” and “More Brains!: A Return to the Living Dead”.

The film is about a woman (Amanda Wyss) who feels that she is trapped in her house as she cares for her father (Patrick Peduto) who abuses her psychologically. When someone from her past returns, she is forced to confront the abuse and cruelty that she takes from her father. But her father will not let go as it leads them to a series of unspeakable acts. This one was one of those films that I didn’t know what to expect as it looked creepy by the film’s poster. Thankfully, I made the right choice to see “The ID” and review it here, as this is a very well-acted film from start to finish.

Some of the reason why I liked was the fact that the directing was very good. First time director/producer Tommy Hutson does a very good job from start to finish. Whether it’s the way that he approaches each of the scenes to how he handles the action, Hutson makes sure its gloomy and intense enough that make sense with the main character’s state of mind. The other thing that I liked about his direction was the fact that acting was very good. Hutson does a very good job making sure the performances are good enough to make it standout. It’s something that is needed for a psychological film like this.

Speaking of the performances, I thought the main performances were great. I liked how both Amanda Wyss and Patrick Peduto brought emotion and creepiness to their characters. It made the psychological aspects work very well as both of their characters are very flawed and troubled throughout. The scenes between the two keeps your interest in the film as the film gets going as its horrifying psychologically. It’s one of the best parts in the film as it sets up the rest of the film.

The screenplay written by Sean H. Stewart was a dark and disturbing one. One of the things that I liked about it was the fact that it does a very good job focusing the main character’s state of mind and her troubled relationship with her father. It’s done very well as it created a level of dread throughout. It plays into the main character’s state of mind during the course of the film as she goes into madness. The other thing that makes this good was the fact that it stays on one character throughout. I liked how it stays in one place makes the main character its only focus. It allows the action to feel dark and disturbing. That helps make the psychological aspects work so well.

The acting and direction really helps make this film very good from start to finish “The ID” is a very dark and disturbing psychological film that will haunt you at night.

In their secluded farmhouse, a mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of Francisca's family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca's loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a dark form. Shot in crisp black and white, the haunting visual compositions evoke its protagonist's isolation and illuminate her deeply unbalanced worldview. Genre-inflected, but so strikingly unique as to defy categorization, writer/director Nicolas Pesce's feature debut allows only an elliptical presence in Francisca's world, guiding our imaginations to follow her into peculiar, secret places.
